Hug your dog on National Cuddle Up Day!
These days, there seems to be a holiday for everything, but “National Cuddle Up Day” is not one to be skipped. Each year, on January 6th, we recognize the great benefit of snuggling someone or something that you love. Pet owners agree – we always look for an excuse to snuggle our fur baby, and National Cuddle Up Day gives us a good reason.
Guess what? There is great scientific evidence to show that cuddling will prolong and improve your life. Snuggling slows your heartrate, and helps your body release oxytocin, a potent hormone. Sometimes called the “cuddle hormone”, oxytocin is responsible for complex social behaviors in mammals. Some benefits include lowering blood pressure, lowering cortisol levels, and increasing your tolerance for pain. Stroking, hugging, and snuggling with a person or pet sends oxytocin levels soaring, and instantaneously will reduce anxiety and promote positive social interaction.
